St. Kitts Marine Managed Areas get German assistance

Director of Marine Resources, Marc Williams

(ZIZ)– St Kitts and Nevis and the rest of region have been given some financial assistance in developing Marine Managed Areas (MMA’s) to help protect the region’s marine resources.

The German Federal Ministry of Environment has allocated over $14 million to the region for the development of marine managed areas.

Minister with responsibility for marine resources, Hon Nigel Carty outlined the importance of MMA’s saying “MMA’s provide protection for important habitats and marine life and restore the productivity of the sea and secure the regeneration of the accompanying resources. In addition, marine management areas generate income through tourist activities and sustainable fishing practices.”

St Kitts and Nevis has already received assistance from other international agencies in the development of fish aggregating devices or FADs and aquaculture as an alternative means of fishing locally.
