Police call for an end to defacing and destroying campaign material

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 26, 2020 (RSCNPF): The Police are calling on persons to cease defacing, removing and destroying campaign sign boards and posters for parties they do not support.

 

Several reports have been made by various political parties about such activities. On a recent “Policing With You” Programme, Superintendent Cromwell Henry addressed the matter.

 

“One of the recurring problems that we always have around this time, during campaigns, is parties defacing each other’s campaign material, you know, you put up your campaign sign, I take it down and put up mine or I go and spray paint it…destroy it. We really want to discourage that type of activity,” Superintendent Henry urged.

 

“I think we have come of age now. We are mature now as an independent country. We should be mature enough to respect each other’s views and make our own decisions without having to be violent [and] without having to be physical against our opponents.”

 

He reminded the public that such acts were offences and went on to say, “…do not take down somebody else’s sign and put up yours or destroy somebody else’s thing just because you are on the other side. That is wrong. That is against the law…it is an offence. If a report is made and we have evidence, we would prosecute. And so, we just want to send out that warning that we do not encourage this type of behaviour and we would prosecute persons whom we have evidence against who commit these types of acts.”

 

The Police are also asking persons erecting boards and putting up posters not to place them over important signs such as traffic signs.
