Plans for Cayon High

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 28, 2019 (ZIZ News): The Ministry of Education is currently addressing concerns of mould and other concerns at Cayon High School.

Permanent Secretary William Hodge told ZIZ News that the initial report has confirmed that there is mould in certain sections of the school and as such professional cleaning is underway.

He said “The entire school, practically, was fumigated. There was some work don in the laboratory before school closed. I, myself, went over on a Saturday morning, got into a HAZMAT suit and assisted with removing stuff from the lab. After we had done that the cupboards in the science lab were removed by Public Works. And so, that space has been re-tested, and we’re awaiting the results of those”.

He said the clean up has been hampered due to teacher materials that need to be removed so that the cleaners can do their job.

“Their records, their personal markbooks, subject markbooks, subject registers, their worksheets and those kinds of things,” he said. “Those are things that teachers need on a day to day basis so we didn’t just want to discard them, get them wet and all of that so we gave them the opportunity to come in and move those things out of the way, basically”.

He also noted that a second set of testing has been done on the grounds. The results are being compiled overseas.

In the meantime the ministry will be meeting with parents at Cayon Primary School on Thursday afternoon to discuss concerns about Cayon High School.
