NEMA advises to prepare as Hurricane Season 2012 approaches

ZIZ News…May 16, 2012 — The National Emergency Management Agency is reminding everyone to be prepared as the 2012 hurricane season approaches.

According to the last update in April provided by the Antigua meteorological services, ten storms have been named for this year’s hurricane season and two are likely to become major hurricanes.

Carl Herbert, NEMA Coordinator, appealed to persons to be vigilant as the season approaches.

He urges residents to pay special attention to trees that need trimming, sheltering, insurance, water storage, batteries for items such as flash lights and radios and non-perishable food items.

Herbert also called on the business sector, especially the construction industry, to secure materials to prevent them from being airborne.

Herbert also praised the St Kitts Electricity Company, for beginning its island-wide tree cutting program.

He ended by saying that despite the calm forecast persons should still be on guard.

Hurricane season begins on June 1 and ends on November 30.
