Marijuana laws not changed yet

Attorney General, the Hon. Vincent Byron

(ZIZ News) Attorney General The Hon Vincent Byron says the changes to marijuana legislation announced by the Prime Minister on Wednesday are in not place yet and the pre-existing laws are still in effect.

Mr Byron told ZIZ that the recommendations in the National Marijuana Commission’s report have been agreed upon but must undergo a process in order to be made into law.

He said there also should be a clear distinction between legalisation and decriminalisation of certain amounts.

He said once the legislation has been changed it is expected that persons should be able to use small amounts for medicinal purposes without fear of criminal charges.

The Attorney General said it is too early to determine specifics of the legislation or when it will come into effect but the process is underway.
