Kittitian Archaeology and Heritage Workshop

(ZIZ News) — A two-day workshop focusing on Kittitian Archaeology and Heritage got underway on Wednesday (March 18).

The event began with an opening ceremony at the headquarters of the Brimstone Hill Society.

Director of the Caribbean Research Group at Leiden University in the Netherlands, Dr. Corinne Hofman said it was part of a Memorandum of Understanding among the local government, the St. Christopher National Trust, the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society and Leiden University.

She said, “The objective of the Memorandum of Understanding is that the parties would coordinate the necessary efforts for their mutual collaboration in the promotion and development of research, teaching, the promotion of science, the strengthening of educational and cultural partnerships for the protection of St. Christopher and Nevis’ cultural heritage for future generations.”

She said over the past five years, researchers have been working with locals to collect and catalogue information on various aspects of St. Kitts’ heritage.

Topics covered at the workshop include “perspectives on Kittitian heritage”, “conservation of heritage” and “how to go from conservation of archaeological heritage to its societal interpretation.”
