Jamaica’s first lottery scam conviction

Kingston, Jamaica — The Lottery Scam Taskforce on Monday secured its first conviction in the Circuit Court after 21-year-old Marlon Davis of Grange Pen, Lilliput in St James, who was arrested for breaches of the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transactions) (Special Provisions) Act 2013, pleaded guilty.

He will be sentenced on Friday, January 24.

Reports are that on December 28, 2013, a team of officers was on special operation in Rose Hall, St James, when Davis, who was seen exiting a financial institution, began to act in a suspicious manner. He was accosted and searched and items used in lottery scamming found.

The police say further investigations led to a search of his premises, which revealed a book containing names, addresses and phone numbers of people living abroad; scripts to obtain the personal information of people, among other lottery scamming paraphernalia. The items were seized.
