High wind advisory in effect

The St. Kitts Meteorological Office is continuing its high wind advisory and is warning persons to stay out of the ocean due to rough waters.

The most recent weather advisory said winds are easterly at 14 – 27 mph and gusting to gale force around 40 miles per hour.

A high surf advisory is in effect for sea bathers and small craft operators are strongly advised to remain in port.

A Senior Met Office official told ZIZ News the rough sea advisory is specific to the Atlantic side of the island.

The small craft warning is in effect for the waters of Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis and the rest of the Leeward Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Hazardous seas, due to strong winds resulting from a very tight pressure gradient, are expected to be an extreme threat to the life and property of mariners.

Waves are being recorded at 7 to 14 feet, occasionally reaching over 18 feet.

The high surf advisory is expected to be in effect until Wednesday
