Election Petition Appeal Against PM Skerrit Dismissed

Basseterre, St. Kitts (March 11, 2013) — A near four-year court battle over the legitimacy of Dominica’s Prime Minister has finally ended. The election petition appeal brought by Dominica’s political opposition seeking to disqualify Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit’s eligibility to hold office has been dismissed by the Court of Appeal.

The decision was handed down moments ago by Chief Justice Her Lordship the Honourable Janice Pereira in Basseterre on Monday morning. Other presiding judges were Justice Don Blackman and Justice Davidson Baptiste.

There were six orders but the main gist of the decision revolved around the failure by the petitioners to provide sufficient evidence of the existence of french passports or renewals of them.

No order was made as to costs.

Roosevelt Skerrit was therefore the duly elected member for Vieille Case and is properly installed as Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
