Caribbean Fisheries Co-management (CARIFICO) Project – National Joint Coordinating Committee (NJCC) Meeting

Basseterre, St. Kitts—13th August, 2013–The Department of Marine Resources, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) continue to work together to improve fisheries management within the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. In that regard, a national meeting will be held to discuss a new project entitled “Caribbean Fisheries Co-management (CARIFICO) Project – National Joint Coordinating Committee (NJCC) Meeting. Participants represent Marine Resources Officers, Fishers, and JICA representatives. The meeting will be held on August 14, 2013 at 9:30 AM in the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) conference room at Lime Kiln, Basseterre.

The objectives of the workshop are:

  • To discuss the future development of Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) Fishery through Co-management
  • To discuss the Establishment information system for the collection, organization, analysis and update of FAD Fishery data
  • To discuss the rules and regulation around Fish Aggregating Device (FADs)
  • To discuss the use of technology for fishing around FADs
  • To review experience in FAD fishery in other Caribbean islands

Additionally, this workshop forms part of a larger policy objective to alleviate food and nutrition security concerns, protect our near shore marine habitats and improve the livelihoods and wellbeing of our fishers. The CARIFICO project is a five year project started in May 2013 and it should conclude by April 2018. This project will be executed and administered through the Department of Marine Resources and funded by JICA.
