King Konris makes history at Leeward Islands Calypso Competition

ZIZ Newsroom, Aug 8, 2010, Basseterre – King Konris has made history as the first calypsonian to ever win the Leeward Islands Calypso Competition two years in a row.
Last night, in Anguilla, Konris beat out eight other calypsonians to take the crown with his songs “Mommy and Daddy” and “Tiger”.
In a backstage interview after the show Konris said he used a few events that happened that night on the show in his songs.
“They came backstage and they told me that baker had just done a line on me. And they explained the song to me because I hadn’t heard the song properly in band practice. I didn’t know what the song was about. So they explained the song to me and I crafted something and I said y’know I’m gonna touch him back because that’s the whole essence of the song. And then just before I went on there was some mishap onstage. I interpreted it a particular way and said ‘you know, maybe I should touch that as well’.
I think it would be good. It falls in line with the theme of the song. It would give me points for wordcraft. So yes, I did them on the spot,” he said.
Reigning national calypso king, socrates, took second runner up.
Vinnie out of anguilla placed first runner up.
