Registered handcart operators pass 600 mark

Kingston, Jamaica The number of registered handcart operators in the Corporate Area now stands at more than 600, Kingston Mayor Angela Brown Burke says.

Brown Burke made the announcement Tuesday while speaking at the monthly Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) Council meeting, at its Church Street chambers, in downtown Kingston.

The figure represents the registration period ending November.

A decision was taken by the KSAC to register handcart operators in the downtown Kingston market district in response to reports that the increasing number of handcarts hindered pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area.

Each handcart operator is now required to pay a registration fee of $3,000 per year to operate in the Corporate Area.
