Chief medical officer praises primary school reading project

The decision for the Organisation of American States (OAS) to publish the findings of a recent reading project has been praised by the Federation’s Chief Medical Officer.

The recent OAS reading project highlighted that the vast numbers of primary school pupils in St Kitts and Nevis have a good reading ability, but there is a small group of children who are experiencing reading difficulties.

According to the Federation’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Patrick Martin, it is encouraging to see the OAS publish the project’s findings. Dr Martin, however outlined his concerns about the group of young students who are finding reading a challenge.

Dr Martin said that the project’s results should not be concealed. He also highlighted that young people who have a love of reading were less likely to resort to a life of crime.
