UK police arrest four over Bermuda govt-office theft

HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC)– Four people have been arrested and released on bail in Britain in connection with an investigation into theft from a Bermuda government department and money laundering.

According to a report in the Bermuda Sun, Jeff Bevan, 47, and his 48-year-old wife Samantha were detained by police in Wales as part of a cross-Atlantic investigation into the disappearance of money from the Accountant General’s Office coffers.

The Bevans formerly lived in Bermuda, and the husband is believed to have worked in a managerial position for the Bermuda government.

The newspaper also said that another man and woman from Leicester, in the English Midlands, were recently arrested and questioned by officers in connection with the inquiry.

All four suspects have been released on police bail until August.

No one has been charged with an offence.

The exact sum of money alleged to have been stolen has not been disclosed, but it is believed to be a significant amount.

Neither the Bermuda Police Service nor the Accountant General’s Office would comment on the incident.
